What to Do When Your PS5 Won’t Read Discs

Few things are more frustrating than sliding a game disc into your PlayStation 5 and seeing… nothing happen. Whether the console ignores the disc, displays an error message, or spins it briefly before stopping, disc reading problems are more common than most players expect. The PS5 is a powerful machine, but like any hardware with moving parts, its optical drive can be affected by small issues.

Instead of panicking or assuming the worst, it helps to go through a structured process to figure out what’s wrong and how to fix it. Most disc-reading problems can be solved at home with simple checks — and you don’t need to take your console apart or spend money right away.

Step 1: Confirm the Disc Is Clean and Undamaged

The most basic step is often overlooked. Even a small smudge or fingerprint can cause the laser to misread the data on a PS5 game disc.

• Hold the disc under bright light to check for dirt, fingerprints, or scratches.

• Use a clean, soft microfiber cloth to wipe it from the center outward in straight lines, not circles.

• If the disc has visible scratches, test it in another PS5 if possible. If it fails there too, the disc itself may be the issue.

It’s also worth confirming that the disc is actually a PS5 or PS4 disc, not a Blu-ray format the console doesn’t support. Region-locked DVDs and some non-standard media may not work on the PS5 drive.

Step 2: Make Sure the Disc Is Inserted Correctly

It sounds obvious, but because of the PS5’s design, it’s easy to insert a disc upside down, especially when the console is standing vertically.

• In horizontal orientation, the label should face upward.

• In vertical orientation, the label should face left (toward the disc slot’s outer edge).
