What to Do When Your PS5 Won’t Read Discs

Few things are more frustrating than sliding a game disc into your PlayStation 5 and seeing… nothing happen. Whether the console ignores the disc, displays an error message, or spins it briefly before stopping, disc reading problems are more common than most players expect. The PS5 is a powerful machine, but like any hardware with moving parts, its optical drive can be affected by small issues.

Instead of panicking or assuming the worst, it helps to go through a structured process to figure out what’s wrong and how to fix it. Most disc-reading problems can be solved at home with simple checks — and you don’t need to take your console apart or spend money right away.

Step 1: Confirm the Disc Is Clean and Undamaged

The most basic step is often overlooked. Even a small smudge or fingerprint can cause the laser to misread the data on a PS5 game disc.

  • Hold the disc under bright light to check for dirt, fingerprints, or scratches.

  • Use a clean, soft microfiber cloth to wipe it from the center outward in straight lines, not circles.

  • If the disc has visible scratches, test it in another PS5 if possible. If it fails there too, the disc itself may be the issue.

It’s also worth confirming that the disc is actually a PS5 or PS4 disc, not a Blu-ray format the console doesn’t support. Region-locked DVDs and some non-standard media may not work on the PS5 drive.

Step 2: Make Sure the Disc Is Inserted Correctly

It sounds obvious, but because of the PS5’s design, it’s easy to insert a disc upside down, especially when the console is standing vertically.

  • In horizontal orientation, the label should face upward.

  • In vertical orientation, the label should face left (toward the disc slot’s outer edge).

If you accidentally insert a disc the wrong way around, the PS5 won’t damage it, but it simply won’t read. Double-check before assuming a bigger problem.

Step 3: Restart the Console and Perform a Simple Reset

Sometimes, temporary system glitches prevent the optical drive from working properly.

  • Eject any disc and power off the console completely (not just Rest Mode).

  • Unplug the power cable for a few minutes.

  • Plug it back in and start the console normally.

  • Reinsert the disc and check if it works.

This quick reset clears temporary errors in the system’s memory that may be affecting the drive.

Step 4: Check for System Software Updates

Sony frequently releases firmware updates that improve hardware performance, including how the PS5 handles discs.

  • Go to Settings → System → System Software → System Software Update.

  • Install any available updates and restart the console.

If your console hasn’t been updated in a while, an outdated firmware version might be causing disc recognition issues.

Step 5: Test Multiple Discs

If one disc fails but others load perfectly, the issue is likely with that specific disc. If none of your discs work, the problem is probably with the console itself.

  • Try several different PS5 and PS4 discs.

  • If only one or two fail, inspect those discs more closely for physical damage.

  • If no discs work at all, continue to the next steps to investigate further.

This simple test helps you determine whether the fault lies in the drive or the media you’re using.

Step 6: Use the PS5’s Built-in Safe Mode for Additional Checks

The PS5 includes a Safe Mode that lets you rebuild system files without erasing your saved games or apps. If the disc drive problem is caused by corrupted system data, this may resolve it.

  • Turn off the PS5 completely.

  • Hold the power button until you hear two beeps (about seven seconds).

  • Connect a controller via USB and select Option 5: Rebuild Database.

This process scans your storage and reorganizes system files. It does not delete games or saves but can clear errors that prevent discs from being recognized.

Step 7: Inspect the Disc Drive for Obstructions or Noise

When inserting a disc, listen closely. The PS5’s drive should make a brief spin-up sound and then go quiet.

  • If you hear grinding, clicking, or no sound at all, there could be a mechanical problem.

  • Shine a light at the disc slot to make sure no foreign objects, debris, or labels are stuck inside.

Do not insert tools or try to force anything out of the drive, as this may cause permanent damage.

Step 8: Avoid Using Damaged or Aftermarket Discs

Discs with cracked centers, peeling labels, or non-standard stickers can harm the drive. If you’re using rental discs or discs that have been resurfaced, check their condition carefully. A failing disc may spin improperly and confuse the PS5’s optical system.

Step 9: Contact Sony Support if Hardware Issues Persist

If none of these steps solve the problem, the PS5’s optical drive may need professional servicing.

  • If your console is under warranty, contact Sony for a repair or replacement.

  • If it’s out of warranty, check for authorized service centers rather than attempting to open the console yourself.

Attempting to repair the drive manually without experience can lead to worse damage and may void any remaining warranty coverage.
